This is a rare German-built Ludwig Loewe & Co. Berlin .44 Russian model made on license from S&W. Elaborately engraved with winged Griffens and a gold “GL” monogram. The initials stood for Georg Luger who, at the time, was an employee of Ludwig Loewe before he gained fame with the Luger semi-auto pistol in the late 1890s. Grips are hand carved tortoise shell with the Ludwig Loewe monogram in the top. The gun is shown in a French fit presentation case lined with violet velvet and silk. (Collection of Mike Clark)

The First Model Merwin Hulbert was instantly recognizable by its shape, open top design, beautifully dished cylinder flutes, and two curious releases, one on the bottom of the frame, and another on the left side of the barrel lug. With the hammer at half cock, pushing the bottom lever to the rear allowed the barrel to rotate 90 degrees on the axis of the frame and slide forward with the cylinder along the arbor. At its furthest extension empty cases were automatically expelled from the cylinder. The Merwin Hulbert’s extraction system was actually quite ingenious. The cartridge rims were retained by an extractor ring on the recoil plate. The distance that the cylinder moved forward was only far enough for an empty cartridge case to clear the back of the cylinder, thus any which had been fired would slide all the way out and fall away. Live rounds still had the head of the bullet resting inside the chamber. After rotating the barrel back into the closed position, reloading was accomplished by sliding the loading gate cover down (on the right side of the frame) exposing the loading channel. In addition, if the hammer was down or at full cock, the lever used to release the barrel was blocked, thereby eliminating any chance of accidentally opening the gun.
